Speyside is famous worldwide for being the home to more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries. However there is much more to Speyside than just whisky. WOW Scotland’s new Highland & Speyside Explorer Tour visits a number of unique Speyside attractions – ideal for those interested in delving into other aspects of Scotland’s history and culture.
Scotland has become synonymous with tweed fabrics and tartan designs, but few people really know how these complex woollen masterpieces are made. At Knockando Woollmill you’ll be treated to a private tour around the only traditional mill still in operation in Speyside. Once inside this peaceful and authentically restored mill, an enthusiastic guide will talk you through the fabric making process.
First you’ll visit the quaint workers’ cottages where you’ll find out how this original woolen mill has maintained its traditions of spinning and weaving through generations of families. Afterwards you’ll see for yourselves how their beautiful and vibrant tweeds are produced today, still using 19th century machinery. You’ll be talked through each intricate stage; from spinning the wool to the complex process of weaving colourful threads into eye-catching tartan designs.
You’ll also get a chance to wander around the mill’s beautifully designed gardens which incorporate an abundance of flowers that can all be used as natural dyes. Of course, after the tour don’t forget to take a look around the shop – one of the only places in Scotland where you can buy Knockando’s unique fabric!
After visiting this wonderful sight, you’ll be blown away by the dexterity of traditional weavers and will definitely think twice when out clothes shopping about how the fabric is made!
Join us on our fantastic Highland & Speyside Explorer Tour to visit Knockando Woomill, plus other fascinating sights including Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, The Glenlivet and Ballindalloch Castle.
